Frequently Asked Questions

What is music therapy ?

Music therapy is a research-based profession, in which a qualified music therapist uses music experience to support people of all ages and abilities to improve their health and wellbeing. Check the Australian Music Therapy Association website for more information about music therapy.

What do we do in a music therapy session ?

Your music therapy plan is tailored by the therapist based on your needs. You will set up music therapy goals with your therapist together and then decide what kind of music therapy methods can be used to work towards your goals. Here are some examples:

Active methods

  • Songwriting

  • Music improvisation

  • Active music-making e.g. singing, instrumental play, song-based activities

Receptive methods

  • Music and relaxation

  • Music and imagery

  • Song lyrics discussion

What if I don't know how to play music ?

No one needs to be musical to access music therapy services. Everyone can use music to express a way of living, and there’s no right or wrong way to do so.

Do I need to find a therapist who can speak my language or has the same cultural background ?

It’s not necessary if there is no communication difficulty. Sometimes it can be helpful if the therapist can use your language to facilitate the therapeutic process, but this is not essential to cultural safety. Some cultural differences between you and the therapist can be beneficial to support you in developing new awareness.
